Camelot wins new lottery licence

Camelot was given the final green light to continue running the UK's National Lottery until at least 2019.

It beat Indian company Sugal & Damani to win the competition for the third Lottery operator's licence.

The National Lottery Commission (NLC) said that it had finalised terms of the decade-long licence with Camelot Group plc.

Its decision brings Camelot's plans to launch a global mega-lottery - with an annual £250 million jackpot - one step closer.

Dr Anne Wright, chair of the NLC which regulates the Lottery, said: "Following the completion of a hard-fought competition process, we are pleased to have finalised terms with Camelot Group plc and to award them the third licence for the National Lottery."

Camelot's bid promised more money to good causes than that of Sugal & Damani's, the NLC said.

The third Lottery operator's licence starts on February 1, 2009.
