Cameron faces pressure after trip
25 January 2007
The pressure on Cameron was ratcheted up another notch with more evidence of a "Brown Bounce" in the polls.
A Guardian/ICM survey found that Gordon Brown has gone up in the estimation of 21% of voters since becoming Prime Minister a month ago.
Meanwhile, more than a fifth of the public said their opinion of the Tory leader had slumped.
The picture among existing Conservative supporters was also bleak, with 42% saying they liked the party, but disliked Mr Cameron.
Overall, Labour maintained a six-point lead on voting preference, with 38% compared to 32% for the Conservatives, according to the poll in the Guardian.
The Lib Dems have surged two points in the wake of their solid performances in last week's Ealing Southall and Sedgefield by-elections.
Mr Cameron has endured a torrid few weeks, with several Tory traditionalists privately calling for a vote of confidence in his leadership amid criticism of the Ealing Southall campaign.
He has also come under fire for travelling to Rwanda, where he has been setting out a Tory strategy to combat global poverty, while much of his Witney constituency is under floodwater.
