Cameron in Union first pledge

David Cameron asserted his Britishness as he pledged to put the Union ahead of any short-term political advantage.

The Tory leader moved to dampen fears that he intends to use "English nationalism" as a weapon against Gordon Brown by stressing that he views the historic alliance as a top priority.

In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Mr Cameron said: "The Union comes first. We are a Unionist party. I would rather have an imperfect Union than some perfect constitutional construct that would threaten the Union."

Mr Cameron will be joined by Scottish Tory leader Annabel Goldie when he delivers a keynote speech on the two countries' future in the shadow of the Edinburgh Parliament.

The Tories, Labour and Lib Dems joined forces last week at Holyrood to vote through plans for a commission looking into the future of devolution.

And Shadow Scottish Secretary David Mundell said: "Annabel was right when she described last Thursday's debate in the Scottish Parliament as the most important in the last eight and a half years. The future of devolution is a cross-party and cross-border issue.

"David's visit is a demonstration of our commitment to creating a strong and prosperous Scotland within a strong and prosperous United Kingdom."

There is overwhelming support among the English for the Union between their country and Scotland, according to a poll for the Sunday Telegraph, but many fear for its future.

More than two thirds want to maintain the link, but just 48% believe it will survive another 25 years.

Mr Cameron and Ms Goldie will discuss the next moves in getting the commission up and running. He will also meet representatives of Scotland's financial services industry.
