Anne and John Darwin face deception charges following his re-appearance more than five years after he vanished and was declared dead in an apparent sea tragedy close to their home in Seaton Carew, near Hartlepool.
Mrs Darwin, 55, appeared before Hartlepool Magistrates on Tuesday, charged with dishonestly obtaining a £25,000 life insurance payment and a policy worth £137,000 which settled her mortgage in the event of his death. She was remanded in custody.
Mr Darwin, a former teacher and prison officer, faced the same court on Monday charged with dishonestly obtaining £25,000 and making an untrue statement to procure a passport. He was also remanded, and was being held at Durham Jail.
After the brief hearing, Mrs Darwin's solicitor Nicola Finnerty said her client wanted to see her sons Mark, 32 and Anthony, 29, who have cut ties with their parents.
Ms Finnerty said: "If her sons would like to see her, she would like to see them.
"She's very tired and very emotional. She has been fully co-operative with the police.
"She's given a full account, obviously I cannot go into any details about what she said. She is obviously concerned about her family."
Last week the sons issued a statement, asking: "How could our mam continue to let us believe our dad had died when he was very much alive?
"We have not spoken to either of our parents since our dad's arrest and at this present time we want no further contact with them."
