Captured Navy crew fly back to Iraq

A group of sailors held hostage for almost a fortnight are returning to their ship off Iraq this week.

The Sun reports that Leading Seaman Faye Turney said a tearful farewell to her husband Adam and daughter Molly, three, before flying out of the UK on Sunday night with Lieutenant Felix Carman, boat navigator Arthur Batchelor and the other five freed Royal Navy hostages.

The newspaper says the group from HMS Cornwall declined the chance to stay in Britain to receive further counselling and will soon be patrolling Iraqi waters, as they were when they were seized.

The Sun reports that the seven Marines who were also held have been given other postings and return to work on Monday.

A Ministry of Defence spokeswoman said: "We are not commenting on the names of individuals but I can confirm that some of the people who were taken in Iraq are returning to their ship this week."

She added: "They are all expected to return back." She said they had returned to work last Monday but had been involved in briefings.

The group was captured after conducting a routine early morning anti-smuggling check on a merchant vessel on March 23.

Iran claimed they had trespassed into its waters and during the 13 days they were held, several hostages were shown on TV apologising.

After their release, the decision to allow the former hostages to sell their stories sparked controversy and permission was subsequently withdrawn.

Defence Secretary Des Browne announced on April 9 that no service personnel would be allowed to sell stories until a policy review had been completed.
