Car plunges 30ft in icy conditions

Snow and freezing winds have caused treacherous conditions on roads in Britain as the Met Office issued severe weather warnings for regions in Scotland, North East England and Yorkshire.
Snow showers have been recorded as far south as Essex and Kent and heavy snow will continue to fall across the east of Scotland and Northumberland.
The fatal crash took place on the northbound carriageway of the A90 Brechin by-pass, when a BMW 5-series slid off the road around one mile south of Edzell.
Grampian Police said it was believed that cold weather conditions played a part in the incident.
Emergency services helped the BMW driver from his car but his condition deteriorated and he died at the scene. He is understood to be in his early 50s and from Aberdeenshire.
Around 30 road traffic collisions were reported in North Yorkshire as vehicles skidded on the snow but nobody was seriously injured, police said.
In Northumbria, police temporarily closed the A1 northbound between Gosforth and Morpeth after vehicles became stranded in the snow.
The strong winds and snow storms also disrupted ferry services in north-east Scotland. NorthLink ferry operators cancelled its service between Aberdeen and Orkney and Shetland.
Matt Dobson, a forecaster for MeteoGroup UK, said the cold snap was due to a high pressure system over Russia forcing cold air across the east of Britain. More snow showers are expected to hit Scotland on Friday.
