Carer stab murder: Man charged

Detectives investigating the stabbing of a carer at a nursing home have charged a resident with her murder.

Kathleen Bainbridge, 58, of North Drift Way, Luton, was working at Abacus House in Princes Street, Dunstable, when she was stabbed just before 2pm on Friday.

Bedfordshire Police have charged 54-year-old Stephen Slatt with her murder and the attempted murder of a female colleague who went to her aid.

A post-mortem examination revealed that Mrs Bainbridge, who was married with two daughters and four grandchildren, died of stab wounds to her upper body.

A police spokeswoman said: "The man arrested has been charged with Kathleen's murder and with the attempted murder of Kathleen's female colleague at the home who went to her assistance during the attack.

"Kathleen's colleague fortunately suffered only superficial injuries."

Slatt will appear before magistrates at a Bedfordshire court yet to be decided on Monday.

Mrs Bainbridge was taken to the Luton and Dunstable Hospital following the attack but died shortly after arrival.

On Friday night, scenes of crime officers began searching the six-bed care home, at a detached Victorian house in Princes Street.

Staff at a neighbouring care home owned and run by the same company refused to comment on the death.
