Carnival to end in blaze of colour

Hundreds of thousands are expected to descend on the second and final day of the Notting Hill Carnival.

The massive street party will draw to a close when battered sound systems are switched off and the floats put away.

Some half a million people are expected to spend Bank Holiday Monday partying at the west London event.

Masquerade floats will snake their way through the streets, to the sound of steel drums.

Themes for the Mas parades include Back From Space, Tutti Frutti Sweeties, Creatures Of The Earth and Paradise.

On Sunday a quarter of a million people swarmed to the area to take part in Europe's biggest street festival.

The carnival officially opened with J'ouvert - a special day for children, and thousands of youngsters hit the streets to dance along to the bands and masquerades.

Metropolitan Police said they made 98 arrests in connection with the festivities.

Some 37 were for drug offences, six for possessing offensive weapons and eight for assault.

A further 10 people who were wanted on warrants were also detained by police.
