Casey uncle remanded over murder

The uncle of two-year-old Casey Leigh Mullen appeared in court via video link on Monday charged with her rape and murder.

Michael Mullen, 21, did not enter any pleas during a brief hearing at Leeds Crown Court.

He was arrested after the toddler was found in a pool of blood at her home in Oak Tree Crescent, Gipton, Leeds, on February 11.

A post-mortem examination showed the youngster died from compression of the neck.

Neighbours described Casey as a "lovely little girl, always smiling".

Mullen, of Lawrence Road, Leeds, was remanded in custody by the Recorder of Leeds, Judge Norman Jones QC.

His trial date has been set for July 2.

He will next appear at Leeds Crown Court on May 29 for a plea and case management hearing.
