Casualty patients 'dissatisfied'

Emergency hospital patients are more dissatisfied with their care than patients undergoing planned procedures, a survey has found.

The findings paint a "bleak picture" according to Which? magazine, which states that "planned" patients rated their care 13% higher than emergency patients.

The consumer champion magazine surveyed 1,000 hospital patients and claims it "unearths stark differences between the experiences of emergency inpatients and those with planned hospital stays".

Emergency patients were less happy than planned patients on all aspects of non-clinical care, the survey found.

Satisfaction with hospital food was at 42% amongst emergency patients, compared with 54% amongst planned patients. Cleanliness received a 67% rating from emergency patients and 73% from planned patients.

The biggest discrepancy was in the rating on "communication between staff members". Emergency patients gave a 58% rating and planned patients 72%.

Overall, just 66% of emergency patients were happy with the way their care was managed versus 79% of planned patients.

Which? also found that 13% of emergency patients were asked their views in contrast to 20% of planned patients. Of the emergency patients who raised a concern, only 25% were happy with how their concern was dealt with, versus 31% of planned patients.

Kate Webb, principal policy adviser at Which?, said: "With emergency care becoming the focus for NHS hospitals, this report paints a bleak picture.

"The prospect of more planned care being delivered closer to home is becoming a reality and our hospitals will have to focus more on the needs of patients admitted in an emergency."
