Caucus wins for Obama and Huckabee

Barack Obama and Mike Huckabee have won the Iowa caucuses as Americans gave their first indications of who they want to run as president.

Illinois senator Mr Obama, who would be the first African-American US president, and former Baptist preacher Mr Huckabee will now have five days of momentum and free media before the world's focus shifts to the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday.

The winners for the Democratic and Republican parties in Iowa were both seen as candidates of change by Americans, many of whom feel their nation is on the wrong track.

Democrat Mr Obama, a 46-year-old senator with only two years' experience in national office, took his message of change and hope to the rural mid-western state of Iowa and left victorious over both former First Lady Hillary Clinton, who led national polls, and former senator John Edwards, the party's 2004 vice presidential nominee.

Mrs Clinton will now hope to get her campaign back on track in New Hampshire next week, while a victory for Mr Edwards in Iowa was seen as crucial if his campaign was going to gain momentum.

While the Democratic race was always close, Republican Mr Huckabee - who was outspent by his closest rival Mitt Romney by 15:1 - continued his strong surprise surge.

But the 52-year-old former Arkansas governor's emphasis on his faith, which played well in Iowa, is unlikely to be as successful in New Hampshire.

The Republican national front-runner, former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, has run a very limited campaign in Iowa, choosing to concentrate on states which go to the polls later.

Michael DuHaime, Mr Giuliani's campaign manager, said: "We congratulate Mike Huckabee on a hard-fought victory in Iowa.

"This race is wide open and we will continue to run a national primary campaign designed to win the number of delegates necessary to become the Republican nominee."
