CBI calls for pharmacies boost

GP practices that offer poor-quality services should "make room" for pharmacies and other providers who can do better, the CBI has said.

Supermarkets and walk-in centres should be encouraged to offer patients a far wider range of services, it said.

Health minister Ben Bradshaw is due to publish a White Paper setting out an extended role for pharmacies.

It is thought patients will be able to access a range of treatments, including vaccinations and health checks.

The CBI said the Government's drive to reform GP services should not be restricted to extending opening hours.

More should be done to encourage new surgeries to open in walk-in centres and supermarkets, it said.

In April 2005, a new pharmacy contract came into force to enable pharmacists to issue repeat prescriptions without the need for a GP.

Some pharmacists were also given powers to review the drug treatments for patients with long-term conditions such as diabetes. Stop-smoking clinics and enhanced lifestyle advice were also included in the plans.

According to the Conservatives, government figures show that only 1,189 pharmacist supplementary prescribers currently exist in England to prevent patients having to go back to their doctor within a year.

And just 101 pharmacies provided supplementary prescribing services in 2006/07 out of more than 10,000 community pharmacies in England.
