Channel 4 must disclose Diana tapes

Channel 4 has been ordered to disclose certain untransmitted material relating to its documentary, Diana: The witnesses in the tunnel.

Mr Justice Eady's ruling at London's High Court relates to footage of interviews recorded for the hour-long programme, which was broadcast in June.

The balance of the application by Lord Justice Scott Baker, the Diana inquest Coroner, regarding other documentary material, was adjourned until next Friday, pending attempts to reach agreement.

Heather Rogers QC, for Channel 4, said that it was policy not to hand over untransmitted material without order of the court.

It did not actively resist disclosure of the footage but needed time to assess the additional material before it was produced.

Thomas de la Mare, for the Ritz Hotel, said that time was tight as members of the paparazzi, who were likely to be key witnesses, were due to give evidence to the inquest at the beginning of the week after next.

"We say an urgent review is required - Channel 4 has to pull out the stops.

"In this documentary, they have given the paparazzi the chance to put their side of it, effectively to scoop the inquest by putting forward their version of events".

Miss Rogers said that Channel 4 would use its best endeavours to conduct its review as quickly as possible.
