Channel services set to resume

The Channel Tunnel was reopening to freight after a fire on a train carrying lorries from Folkestone to Calais, with passenger services due to resume on Saturday morning.

Safety inspectors were examining the Tunnel to establish the extent of the damage done by the blaze.

Two hundred French and 100 British firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, worked in cramped conditions for 16 hours as the fire burned at temperatures of up to 1,000 degrees centigrade.

Thirty-two lorry drivers and train staff fled to safety after the fire broke out with six suffering smoke inhalation injuries.

Coach operators and airlines announced extra services over the weekend to account for the likely spike in demand.

Lorry drivers in Dover spent up to eight hours parked on the M20 waiting to access the port.

Meanwhile, French authorities announced an inquiry in to the cause of the fire.

Eurotunnel CEO Jacques Gounon has rejected the possibility that brakes on a truck caught fire after overheating.

French Transport Secretary Dominique Bussereau described the fire as an "accident" on French radio.

Investigators are likely to examine the presence of a lorry carrying highly flammable carbolic acid, or phenol, which it is claimed overturned before the blast.
