Charles' income virtually unchanged

The Prince of Wales' private income has remained virtually unchanged despite the recession, according to sources.

The funds Charles received during the last financial year from the Duchy of Cornwall - the landed estate given to the heir to the throne - are said to be close to the figure of the previous 12 months.

The prince has also introduced a range of "green" measures at his Clarence House offices and Highgrove Estate in Gloucestershire to reduce his carbon footprint.

The full details of the royal's income will be released on Tuesday when the annual report of the work of the Prince and his wife the Duchess of Cornwall is published.

In January, the UK officially went into recession and over the New Year period a number of well known retailers disappeared from high streets across the country.

The downturn has also seen unemployment rise with the UK jobless total now standing at a 12-year high of 2.261 million.

But the Duchy has managed to ride out the recession in part because it is "conservatively" run and has invested more in agricultural land and commercial property than residential homes which have fallen significantly in value.

During the 2007-08 financial year Charles' private income rose by 7% to 16,273,000 million.

The Daily Mail reported that there will be "negligible change" to the 2008-09 figure.

A royal source confirmed there would be little difference between the numbers over the last two financial years.
