Chef 'did not choose to disappear'

The father of missing chef Claudia Lawrence has insisted he is "absolutely convinced" she did not go missing of her own accord as he spoke of his frustration at three months of silence.

But Peter Lawrence refused to criticise police as he admitted his family were no closer to being reunited with the 35-year-old university chef.

Mr Lawrence said a police search of a pub near her home, in the York suburb of Heworth, earlier this week was not of "particular significance" to the case.

But as he said her disappearance remained a "mystery" three months on, he added: "I am not frustrated with their investigation - I am frustrated with whoever is out there who has not come forward to help.

"I am absolutely convinced this is not something she has chosen to do herself."

Miss Lawrence has not been seen since March 18 and failed to turn up for a 6am shift at the University of York, where she worked, the following day.

Earlier this week, police searched the Nag's Head pub, just a few doors from her home, for a second time after the detective leading the investigation said he believed Miss Lawrence was involved in relationships of "complexity and mystery".

But Mr Lawrence said he did not have any suspicions over the police search of the pub.

He added: "It is of no particular significance except for the fact it was three doors away from her house and she was spending a lot of time there, as she was a regular customer."

He would not comment on speculation the family would consider hiring a private investigator if police scaled down their inquiries. He later added: "I am absolutely convinced this is not something she has chosen to do from everything leading up to it to everything I know about her."
