Children in house were murdered

Two children found dead last week were murdered, Scotland Yard has said.

Police responded to a call at 9.30am last Saturday from a bus driver who saw an incident in the street involving two adults and a young child in the Brigstock Road area of Thornton Heath, south London.

A three-year-old girl suffering several injuries was taken to a south London hospital and, following inquiries, the bodies of two young children - a boy under six and a girl under six months - were discovered at a property in nearby Melfort Road.

Police arrested a 62-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman in connection with the deaths. The man was later released on bail to return to a south London police station in June and the woman was held under the Mental Health Act.

Post mortem examinations were carried out on the two children on Monday and revealed the boy had suffered facial injuries and the girl had fractured ribs, a Scotland Yard statement said.

But the overall results proved inconclusive.

Toxicology tests will now be carried out to try to discover exactly how the youngsters died.

The children have yet to be formally identified and next of kin have not all been informed. The three-year-old girl involved in the initial incident has left hospital and been taken in to care.

Child abuse investigators are leading the inquiry into the deaths but early reports suggesting the children had been given alcohol and were neglected could not be confirmed.

Inquests were opened and adjourned at Croydon Coroners Court on Thursday.
