Children's bodies found in house
06 January 2007
A man, thought to be in his 60s, and a woman in her 20s are being questioned by police after being arrested with a third child, a young girl, in a street nearby.
The girl they were with is being treated in hospital in the care of doctors and social services. She is in a stable condition.
The alarm was raised on Saturday morning after police were contacted by a member of the public who expressed concern about the behaviour of the man and woman towards the girl.
After making the arrests, officers rushed to a house in Melfort Road, Thornton Heath, south London, where they found the dead children.
Police said they did not yet know how the two youngsters met their deaths. Officers believe one of the dead children was under six-months-old, and the other was younger than six-years-old.
Officers are treating the deaths as "unexplained".
Superintendent Chris Bourlet of Croydon Police said: "There was an incident in the street reported by a member of the public involving a white man and a black woman who were in charge of a young child.
"Police arrived on scene and took the child to hospital. The two adults were arrested and have been taken to a south London police station.
"As a result of the inquiries the officers made at the time they attended Melfort Road in Thornton Heath where on gaining entry to a premises there they found two young children who unfortunately were dead."
