City out to welcome soldiers home

Thousands of people have lined the streets of a cathedral city to welcome home soldiers who had returned from deployment to Afghanistan and Iraq.

More than 200 troops from the 1st Battalion the Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment (1 PWRR) marched through the cobbled streets of Canterbury, the eighth and final parade in a series of homecoming parades they have taken part in over the past week.

Led by the regiment's red-coated Kohima Band, the soldiers marched through the city's cobbled streets as crowds cheered and waved banners and Union flags to welcome them home.

They lined up beside the Boer War memorial in Dane John Gardens for an inspection and a presentation of operational medals to two soldiers from Herne Bay.

An engraving of Canterbury Cathedral was also presented to the regiment on behalf of the people of the city.

Earlier a private service was held in the cathedral to offer thanksgiving and to commemorate soldiers who have lost their lives in combat.

Soldiers from 1 PWRR, known as the Tigers, were the last to serve in Basra having returned at the end of May, while another contingent returned from Afghanistan earlier this year.

With a distinguished history, PWRR is the most decorated of all British Army regiments, with 57 Victoria Crosses, including the VC awarded to Lance Corporal Johnson Beharry in 2004 for his gallantry in Iraq.

On Friday he attended the soldiers' homecoming parade in Tunbridge Wells, where thousands of wellwishers cheered and clapped them as they paraded through the town.

Troops from 1 PWRR have also attracted massive crowds when marching through other towns and cities including Portsmouth, Southampton and Guildford over the past week.
