Civil servants' ballot result due

10 January 2007
About 80,000 employees at the Department for Work and Pensions have been voting on whether to accept a three-year pay deal.
The Public and Commercial Services Union said the offer would mean a below inflation pay rise including a pay freeze next year.
General Secretary Mark Serwotka warned that a civil service-wide strike would be held later this year unless there were improvements on pay and the threat of compulsory redundancies was removed.
The union said a number of Government departments, including the DWP, were set to announce compulsory job cuts in the coming weeks.
He said his union will move to a ballot on industrial action by the end of this month unless there were improvements to pay offers and it received assurances that there would be no compulsory redundancies.
"Gordon Brown said he wants to listen - our message to him is that he should start by listening to his own employees.
"It is completely unacceptable that hard working civil and public servants who battle to deliver services against a backdrop of job cuts and diminishing resources should be rewarded with below inflation pay.
"If the Government wants to avoid destructive industrial action then they need to give guarantees on jobs and services and begin valuing their own workforce."
Other unions representing public sector workers have also warned of possible industrial action in the coming months.
