Civil servants vote on pay strike

Thousands of workers at jobcentres and benefit offices have started voting on whether to go on strike in a dispute over pay.

Ballot papers were sent to 80,000 employees at the Department for Work and Pensions after union leaders claimed a below-inflation pay rise was to be imposed which would see two out of five staff receive no wage increase next year.

The Public and Commercial Services union said the three-year pay offer would lead to average rises of 1% a year.

General secretary Mark Serwotka said: "It is completely unacceptable that hard-working staff, who have battled to provide a service against a backdrop of cuts, should be rewarded for their efforts with a pay cut in real terms for the next three years.

"We had hoped to find a negotiated solution, but management's threat to impose the below-inflation pay offer has incensed staff who are amongst the lowest paid in the Civil Service."

The ballot closes on November 26 and the result is expected to be announced shortly afterwards.

The strike ballot comes as the union enters into talks with the Cabinet Office in a bid to reach a negotiated agreement to a Civil Service-wide dispute over jobs, pay and conditions which has already led to national strikes this year.
