Clean-up begins after floods misery

A clean-up operation is under way after heavy rain and strong winds caused flooding across the UK.

Scotland was worst hit by the weather with communities in Huntly in Aberdeenshire and the coastal town of Stonehaven counting the cost of the damage.

People were also rescued from cars and homes in parts of Wales by firefighters and the deluges cancelled some train services.

Sodden carpets and rugs were piled up in gardens along with other belongings of those hit by the water.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) said the River Deveron, which passes near Huntly, rose 8ft in 27 hours to 9.9 ft (3.017 metres) at the Avochie gauging station at 3.30am on Monday - the highest level since records began in 1959. The previous record was 9.17ft in 2002.

A total of 40 residents at the Meadows Care Home in Huntly were also evacuated when flood water poured into a dining room and two bedrooms at 1.30am.

Raymond Strachan, 55, who has lived in Huntly for more than 12 years, said flooding destroyed his caravan and Mitsubishi Warrior 4x4 car.

Speaking outside his home in Sycamore Place, he said: "Everything is destroyed on the ground floor. There was between 4.5ft and 5ft of water inside the house. I've never seen flooding like this before. It was a torrent."

He estimated the cost of the damage to his property would be between £10,000 and £15,000.

Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond, visiting the flood-hit area of Huntly, said: "Many families and elderly people have been affected by what has been the second round of flooding in as many weeks. In my capacity as MSP for Gordon, I stand ready to do everything I can to assist."
