Comic Relief pot smashes record

Comic Relief's TV extravaganza has raised a record amount for charity - despite one of its presenters courting controversy within minutes of it starting.

Host Davina McCall was forced to mouth "sorry" to millions of viewers after Angus Deayton swore live on air during a gag, two hours before the watershed.

But the show was a huge success and by the time it ended at 2.10am on Saturday, the fundraising total stood at a massive £57.8 million - easily supassing the previous record of £40.5 million.

The show saw a whole host of Britain's best-known comedians "doing something funny for money", as well as appearances from bands including Take That and The Script.

The night of comedy sketches and wacky fundraising stunts included the last ever French and Saunders sketch.

Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders performed a parody of the smash hit Mamma Mia! The Movie, with guest stars including Sienna Miller, Joanna Lumley, Philip Glenister and Alan Carr.

There were also special Red Nose treats from The Royle Family, the cast of Outnumbered, Ricky Gervais and a Little Britain sketch featuring Robbie Williams.

As well as McCall and Deayton, other hosts included David Tennant, Fern Britton, Claudia Winkleman, Jonathan Ross and Graham Norton.
