Commons hunt for MPs' expenses mole

31 January 2009
The search was launched after a series of damaging leaks left politicians struggling to contain public fury over generous parliamentary perks.
Anger was stoked further when it was disclosed that MPs will get a 2.33% pay rise next year - as millions of private sector workers face freezes or even cuts.
Gordon Brown was forced to defend Home Secretary Jacqui Smith after it emerged she had "mistakenly" claimed for two adult movies watched by her husband.
The Prime Minister and other party leaders also urged the UK's sleaze watchdog to bring forward an inquiry into Westminster remuneration.
In a letter to the chairman of the Committee for Standards in Public Life, Sir Christopher Kelly, Mr Brown asked for "progress on this issue as soon as practical".
He suggested the committee considered scrapping the controversial second-home allowance - for which two ministers, including Ms Smith, are under investigation - in favour of a simpler system.
London MPs should be prevented from claiming for second homes altogether, he indicated, and others moved to "a simpler, overnight allowance that is independently determined".
The committee is expected to confirm that it will rush through the probe, which had not been due until the autumn.
Sir Stuart Bell, a member of the ruling Commons Commission, disclosed the mole hunt in an interview with BBC2's Newsnight and said: "All of the receipts of 650-odd MPs, redacted and unredacted, are for sale at a price of £300,000, so I am told."
