Couple re-arrested over baby death

Detectives investigating the suspicious death of a 17-month-old boy have re-arrested a couple, police said.

It is believed the pair - a 25-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man - are the baby's mother and her partner.

A third man, aged 35, was also arrested on Tuesday night in connection with the death of the infant, who was pronounced dead at North Middlesex Hospital, north London, on August 3.

A post-mortem examination carried out at Great Ormond Street Hospital proved inconclusive and further tests are being carried out. Police are treating the death as suspicious.

The couple were first arrested earlier this month - the woman at the hospital, and the man later at a north London police station.

They were released on bail, pending further enquiries. But at 9pm on Tuesday, the 31-year-old man was detained once more by officers, at the same time the other man was arrested in Epping Forest.

On Wednesday morning, the woman was rearrested. They are being questioned at separate north London police stations.

Detectives were called to the hospital after concerns were raised by staff, a Metropolitan Police spokesman said.

Officers from the Child Abuse Investigation Command are investigating and Haringey Council has launched its own inquiry.

A spokesman for the council could not confirm whether the 17-month-old boy was on their At Risk Register.
