Crash couple had wed previous day

A couple thought to be among those who died in the Thai air disaster got married the day before the plane came down, a grieving father has revealed.

Susan Howell, 26, and 41-year-old former soldier Steve Saunby from Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, were on the "trip of a lifetime" with another couple - Neil Slater, known as Harry, and his wife Helen - when they took the ill-fated flight from Bangkok to the tourist resort of Phuket. All four are believed to have died in the crash.

On Wednesday Ms Howell's father Stuart said he believed his daughter got married in Bangkok the day before they flew.

He told the Scunthorpe Telegraph: "As far as we knew, Steve and Susan were married the day before the flight and were going to Phuket to enjoy their honeymoon with Harry and Helen, who were witnesses at their marriage."

Mr Howell added: "We have been receiving texts and phone messages from worried friends and family all day long. But nobody really knows what's going on."

At least 89 people died when the budget One-Two-Go Airlines flight crashed and burst into flames as it struggled to land in bad weather on Sunday evening.

Some 123 passengers, mostly foreigners, and seven crew were on board the flight, which is believed to have claimed the lives of eight British nationals.

Mr Saunby was a well-known figure in the pub trade in Scunthorpe, Grimsby and Gainsborough.

Sarah Fielding, who works at one of Mr Saunby's former pubs - The Pestle and Mortar, in Grimsby - said: "They had gone out to get married. They'd known each other for years.

"Everyone knew how excited he was about going because they'd been planning it for months. It was the trip of a lifetime. He was an absolutely top bloke. Up for a laugh. Everyone here knew him."
