More than 350 Beijing athletes took part in the 12-float procession through London amid an Autumn chill but masses of warm smiles and waves from sports fans.
Double Olympic swimming champion Rebecca Adlington, 19, said: "It has been absolutely brilliant. Seeing the amount of people who came out was a surprise and it is a little overwhelming really."
Double Paralympic swimming champion Ellie Simmonds, 13, and 14-year-old diving sensation Tom Daley had the day off school for the big occasion.
Chris Hoy, triple Olympic cycling champion in Beijing, said it was a "great way to say thank you" for all the public's support since the games.
The 32-year-old Scot, along with his fellow cyclists, took pride of place on the lead float as Team GB's record-breaking athletes were honoured by the city which will host the Games in 2012.
Hoy has been taken aback by his new-found fame since his triple gold medal haul in Beijing - with even movie stars like Samuel L Jackson swept up by Olympic fever.
Hoy added: "You get stopped in all kinds of places, and people all say nice things, that they have been inspired and you think you may have had an impact. I have been asked to do some amazing things, and the most surreal thing which happened was when Samuel L Jackson asked to have his photo taken with me."
And middleweight Olympic boxer James DeGale, who had been partying into the early hours at the Mobo awards, had to send his father Leroy out on an emergency mission after forgetting to bring his medal along. His father ended up hurling it up to him during the parade after rushing it over from their home in Harlesden, north-west London.
Simon Clegg, the British Olympic Association's (BOA) Chef de Mission in Beijing, said: "This is a fantastic and historic day bringing together the most successful Olympic team for 100 years with their Paralympic colleagues to celebrate British success. It is a great way to celebrate and also to look forward to London 2012."
