Cruddas misses out in reshuffle

Prime Minister Gordon Brown completed his Government reshuffle by announcing changes to junior ministerial ranks.

There was no job for leading left-winger Jon Cruddas, but two of the MPs behind the 2006 plot which forced Tony Blair to announce his plans to quit were rewarded with posts on the Government payroll.

It was confirmed that the high-profile job of immigration minister has gone to Phil Woolas, while Vernon Coaker gains promotion within the Home Office to become police minister.

Peter Mandelson's deputy is Pat McFadden, who will have to represent the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform at the despatch box in the House of Commons, as his boss will be in the House of Lords.

Former Conservative MP Quentin Davies, who defected to Labour the day before Mr Brown took office last year, is rewarded with a junior post in the Ministry of Defence, reaching the ministerial rank that he never achieved in 20 years on the Tory benches. And the champion of academy schools, Lord Adonis, makes a surprise move from education to the Department for Transport.

At the Treasury, Stephen Timms replaces Jane Kennedy as Financial Secretary, while Kim Howells loses his job at the Foreign Office.

Ms Kennedy moves to the Environment Department, where she will be Hilary Benn's deputy.

Britain's first Muslim minister Shahid Malik is promoted to parliamentary under-secretary of state in the Ministry of Justice.

And Chris Bryant, Sion Simon and Kevan Jones, who all signed the backbenchers letter which prompted Mr Blair to announce a timetable for his resignation in 2006, each gain ministerial office.

Rhondda MP Mr Bryant is deputy Leader of the Commons and Birmingham Erdington's Mr Simon has a junior post in the Universities Department, while Mr Jones becomes parliamentary under-secretary of state in the Ministry of Defence.
