Cyclist hurt in crash with MP's car

Conservative MP Simon Burns was involved in a collision with a cyclist as he left Parliament in his car.

The cyclist, who is believed to be in his 20s, has been airlifted to the Royal London Hospital in east London, where he was in a stable condition.

It is believed the Chelmsford MP was driving a 4x4 vehicle out of the main gates of the House of Commons when the accident happened in Parliament Square at 6.06pm on Thursday.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "A collision occurred as a 4x4 exited the main gates. The vehicle stopped at the scene, the male driver was uninjured."

No arrests have been made. The spokesman gave no further details.

Mr Burns said he would not comment on the accident.

Anti-war protester Brian Haw, who has been demonstrating opposite Parliament for nearly seven years, said: "I heard the impact - it was quite loud.

"It looked as though the cyclist had no time to stop before hitting the front.

"The cyclist, he was in a bad way and was being looked after by the doctors. I hope he is all right."
