Cyprus death: Pair face extradition

Two British tourists convicted of involvement in the killing of a Cypriot teenager will face extradition proceedings soon, lawyers have said.

Luke Atkinson, 23, and Michael Binnington, 22, both of Witham, Essex, are expected to appear before magistrates in London within the next three weeks.

Lawyers from campaign group Fair Trials International (FTI), which is offering advice to the two men, said they expected a hearing to take place at the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court.

FTI said it was troubled by the case and would oppose extradition.

Labour MEP Richard Howitt has also raised concerns and says the men have been victims of a "miscarriage of justice"

Christos Papiris, 17, died after his moped was hit by a car in Protaras, Cyprus, in 2006.

The two men were passengers in the car, which was being driven by Atkinson's uncle Julian Harrington.

Harrington, 40 - also of Witham - was jailed for 15 years in 2007 after admitting manslaughter and causing grievous bodily harm.

Atkinson and Binnington were acquitted of conspiracy to commit manslaughter following a court hearing in Cyprus last year. But a higher court overturned that verdict in January and found them guilty.

Each was then given a three-year jail term in their absence by a court in Nicosia in April.
