Darfur survivors stage protest

Hundreds of survivors of the ongoing crisis in Darfur gathered outside Downing Street to plea for more support in the strife-torn region.

Protesters chanted "You don't forget" in a bid to remind political leaders that millions were still facing disease, starvation and conflict.

Fatima Abdelshafi, 30, who sought asylum in the UK two years ago, said the rescue job was only half done.

The mother-of-two, speaking through a translator, added: "Patience is running out.

"Sudan militia killed my uncle, my neighbours and I fear for my family and entire community every day."

Darfur exploded into conflict in 2003 when rebel groups began attacking government targets.

The Sudanese government retaliated by launching a military and police campaign across the region.

Since then more than two million people have become displaced after fleeting their homes.

Campaigners handed a letter, addressed to Gordon Brown, over to Downing Street officials.

It read: "Our people's fates rest in your hands."
