D-Day on council workers pay offer

Union leaders are to decide whether to accept an improved deal for council workers, after previously threatening strike action.

Unison has already rejected the employers' revised offer of 2.47% and a new minimum rate of £6 an hour for council workers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The GMB union, which also has members in local government, will hold a conference to consider the new pay offer.

GMB national officer Brian Strutton said: "GMB negotiators are recommending that the next step should be to formally consult the members about the improved offer."

Employers originally offered a 2% pay rise for over a million council workers but improved the amount after unions warned of a national strike.

A Unison spokeswoman said further meetings would be held over the next week.
