De Menezes pre-inquest hearing held
25 January 2008
Bereaved relatives of the Brazilian electrician joined dozens of barristers and legal representatives at a pre-inquest hearing in central London.
Deputy assistant coroner Sir Michael Wright QC said thousands of pages of statements, exhibits and other documents have already been served on those involved.
The retired High Court judge, who has been appointed to oversee the inquest, suggested that it may not start on time because of the sheer volume of evidence involved.
He also said Southwark Coroner's Court would not be a suitable venue for the three-month inquest which is due to start on September 22.
But local councils have still not been able to find another building nearby that will be able to house the large number of legal representatives, family members, press and members of the public.
Sir Michael made a brief opening statement before excluding the press and public so "sensitive" matters could be discussed. These include applications by 42 Metropolitan Police officers, including the two men who fired the shot that killed Mr de Menezes, to give their evidence anonymously.
Mr de Menezes was shot dead by counterterrorist police who mistook him for suicide bomber Hussain Osman on July 22, 2005.
His family believe an inquest could throw fresh light on how he met his death as they campaign to hold those responsible to account.
