Decision due on Arts Council grants
Related Articles
01 January 2008
Nearly 200 groups have been threatened with the withdrawal of grants, leaving many facing the prospect of closure. They submitted appeals last month and Arts Council England and the organisations will receive letters by special delivery informing them of their fate.
Chairman Sir Christopher Frayling has indicated that some will be granted a reprieve.
Stars including Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen and Kevin Spacey have protested against the proposed cuts.
National Theatre artistic director Nicholas Hytner has described the proposals as a "catastrophe" for the arts.
It is thought that three organisations Hytner has personally championed in representations to the council - the Bush Theatre in west London, the Northcott Theatre in Exeter and the National Student Drama Festival - will be saved.
Groups with less high profile support could find their appeals rejected.
Arts Council England plans to use the money saved to provide regular funding for 80 new projects. Their identities are also due to be disclosed.
