Digital parenting guide launched

Parents in England will be able to get help on dealing with issues such as bullying and dealing with the impact of divorce via text messaging as part of a £17m government scheme set to be announced.

The move is among a wide range of digital parenting aids being unveiled by Children's Secretary Ed Balls.

It will give parents the chance to get information using the internet, over the phone and through text and instant messaging.

The scheme comes following research showing that parents prefer to receive information online, with 63% of fathers saying it was their favourite way to get help and support.

Hosting a day of Children Plan's debate with parents and young people in Leeds, Birmingham, Portsmouth and London, Ed Balls also announced a new internet site for single fathers to help them stay in touch with their children, that will including online games, picture sharing and hints on how to make the most of their relationship with their children.

Mr Balls said: "I want to make Britain the best place in world for our children and young people to grow up.

"Events like today in Leeds, Birmingham, London and Portsmouth have given me the chance to hear exactly what parents want and need, and helped us shape our Children's Plan to make all our children's lives even better."

The overall Parent Know-How Programme is worth £44m and applies to England. The web-based and telephone services due to be announced will be given a share of £17m.

It will mean fathers can get answers to parenting questions by text messaging and talk to other fathers through online instant messaging.

The initiative is among a series of electronic supports for parents that will also include an online 'virtual school gate' where parents of older children can meet and podcasts and social networking for single parents.
