Doctor jobs chaos: reforms planned

Far-reaching reforms of junior doctor training are expected to be proposed by an independent review into the chaos that hit the system earlier this year.

Professor Sir John Tooke is set to publish the findings of his inquiry into the fiasco that led thousands of young medics to take to the streets in protest.

A Sunday newspaper reported that he would pin the blame on weak leadership by health officials and doctors' leaders and make a series of recommendations.

Face-to-face interviews and a longer period to choose a specialism were among the changes he was said to be putting forward to ministers.

The Independent Inquiry into Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) was set up by then Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt in May as she faced calls to quit over the chaos.

MMC is designed to cut the number of years it takes for junior doctors to reach consultant level from about 14 years to 11.

The online Medical Training Application Service (MTAS) - part of MMC - was shelved by ministers after controversy raged over the system.

Medics complained that application forms were badly worded and resulted in many of the best candidates not being granted interviews.

Some doctors, under the campaign group Remedy UK, took legal action to try and overturn the entire process.

A judge ruled that the interviews that had taken place should stand, but acknowledged the distress caused to thousands of junior doctors.
