Donors chip in with £5m for Labour

Labour has received nearly £5 million in donations this year - the lion's share of the £11 million given to all parties, the latest figures show.

A quarterly update from democracy watchdog the Electoral Commission revealed the Tories picked up £3.74 million and the Liberal Democrats £1.16 million.

Labour also paid back, or converted into donations, six loans worth a total of £3.23 million.

Secret loans from wealthy backers are at the heart of the cash-for-honours controversy over which charges are being considered by prosecutors.

David Cameron's Conservatives also paid off £19.25 million of loans - funded by the multimillion-pound sell-off of its historic Smith Square London HQ.
