Two doormen have been shot outside Alma de Santiago nightclub in Penny Lane, Liverpool.

One of the men is in a critical condition with stomach injuries, Merseyside Police said. The other is in a stable condition with leg injuries.

The doormen are aged 35 and 44 but police said they did not yet have a possible motive for the attack.

Officers believe a gunman travelled to the scene in a dark coloured hatchback car, which may have had other passengers.

Penny Lane is closed while officers investigate the shooting and CCTV is being examined.

A force spokeswoman said: "The public will notice a raised level of police visibility in the area."

It is the latest shooting in a city shocked by the shooting of 11-year-old Rhys Jones on Wednesday.
