Kevin Reynolds, 43, pleaded guilty to assaulting the Manchester United manager outside a London train station before attacking an officer who tried to detain him.
Reynolds, who appeared at City of Westminster Magistrates Court, was remanded in custody to be sentenced at a later date at Southwark Crown Court. It is likely that Reynolds will be handed a prison sentence of up to two years.
The attack took place on Monday shortly after 4pm while Sir Alex was waiting for his driver outside Euston Station in central London.
Reynolds, originally from Fife but now of no fixed abode, staggered towards Sir Alex who initially thought he was a beggar asking for money, the court heard.
Reynolds suddenly struck out with his right fist, punching Sir Alex in the groin and leaving him doubled up in pain. The court was told that Reynolds then said: "I'm sorry Fergie. I did not know it was you."
A police community support officer for the British Transport Police arrived to find Sir Alex in pain. The culprit was pointed out at which point PCSO Peace Toluwa, attempted to detain Reynolds. But as he was doing so, the support officer was head-butted in the face, causing him to stagger backwards. The officer was then subjected to a torrent of racial slurs.
Back up police arrived at which point Reynolds was placed in the back of a police van and taken to a nearby police station.
The attack left a shocked Sir Alex with soreness and tenderness, but no further treatment was needed, the court heard. PCSO Toluwa was left with a large cut to his top lip.
In court Reynolds pleaded guilty to two counts of a racially aggravated public order offence, one count of common assault and one count of actual bodily harm.
