Prince Philip, 86, was admitted to King Edward VII hospital in central London on Thursday after his health deteriorated having earlier caught a heavy cold.
He will return to Windsor Castle to continue his recuperation, Buckingham Palace officials said.
His engagements for Monday have been cancelled with future diary dates to be decided on a day to day basis.
The Duke was admitted to the £500-a-night private hospital after his health deteriorated having earlier caught a cold. He was allowed to leave following a medical assessment with consultants.
He was being treated by the Physician to the Queen, Harley Street doctor Professor John Cunningham.
The Duke is due to accompany the Queen on a visit to the Britannia Royal Navy College in Dartmouth on Thursday. A decision on whether he will now attend will be made later this week.
Philip, who has been married to the Queen since 1947, has generally enjoyed good health even into old age, with most of his ailments being sports related.
But it is thought that his age meant that his recent illness had to be monitored closely.
The Kind Edward VII Hospital has long been the first port of call for sick members of the Royal Family. The Duchess of Cornwall was the latest in a long line of royals to go to the exclusive clinic when she underwent a hysterectomy in March last year.
