Duke recuperates at Windsor Castle

The Duke of Edinburgh is recuperating in Windsor Castle having left hospital after treatment for a chest infection.

Philip, 86, was discharged from King Edward VII Hospital in central London three days after being admitted.

After thanking staff at the private clinic he walked to a waiting car, smiling and waving to photographers before being whisked away.

The Duke's immediate engagements have been cancelled while he continues to rest following the illness.

Future diary dates will be decided upon on a day-to-day basis, Buckingham Palace said.

The Duke was admitted to the private hospital on Thursday afternoon after his health deteriorated having earlier caught a heavy cold.

He played a full role in the recent state visit by President Nicolas Sarkozy of France, but was forced to to pull out of a memorial service for Sir Edmund Hillary on Wednesday.

During his stay in hospital, the Duke was treated by the Physician to the Queen, Harley Street doctor Professor John Cunningham.

It was decided that he was fit enough to leave following a medical assessment with consultants.

On Thursday, Philip is due to accompany the Queen on a visit to the Britannia Royal Navy College in Dartmouth. A decision on whether he will now attend will be made later this week.
