Economic recovery 'may save Labour'

Labour could still claw back the Tories' double-digit lead in the polls if there are signs of economic recovery by the next general election, according to a survey.

The ICM poll for The Guardian suggests 8% of voters currently planning to vote Conservative or Liberal Democrat would consider backing Labour if the economy turned a corner.

While the Tories are still 12 points clear, such a swing could be enough to return Labour as the largest party in the House of Commons.

Gordon Brown must call an election by June 2010 at the latest.

The ICM poll showed support for the Tories on 42%, unchanged since last month.

Labour's support was also unchanged, on 30%, while the Lib Dems were up two on 20%.

But the Prime Minister could take heart that 9% of Tory voters and 22% of Lib Dem voters said they were "more likely to consider voting Labour" if there were signs of economic recovery by then.

That means about 8% of voters presently planning to vote Conservative or Lib Dem could be persuaded to switch to Labour.
