An emergency rescue operation was launched after the aircraft came down in the area of Catterick Garrison in north-east Yorkshire.

A Ministry of Defence spokeswoman said: "A search and rescue operation is under way following reports of a helicopter crash in the Catterick Garrison area."

Aircraft from RAF Leconfield and RAF Boulmer were sent to the area, along with a mountain rescue team from RAF Leeming, she added.

The crash site was cordoned off, said a North Yorkshire Police spokesman.

He said: "At just before 9pm police received a report that a military helicopter had crashed in a wooded area in the countryside west of Catterick Garrison.

"The initial reports indicate that a number of military personnel are involved and there have been casualties."
