Emergency landing for easyJet plane

An easyJet plane bound for Luton from Greece has been forced to turn back after it developed a "technical problem" mid-flight.

Flight EZY 2002 returned to Athens and landed safely, said a spokeswoman for the budget airline.

The Boeing 737 reportedly developed a problem in one engine after take-off and asked for an emergency landing, dumping most of its fuel before returning to the airport.

The easyJet spokeswoman said the flight's 119 passengers were offered the option of taking the easyJet flight to Gatwick later on Sunday or being given a hotel room and catching the next day's flight to Luton.

She said: "The flight returned from airborne due to a technical problem and passengers who wanted to were transferred to the next available flight to Gatwick 40 minutes later.

"We don't know the nature of the technical problem yet but our engineers are investigating."

The flight's departure was already delayed for 90 minutes because of the knock-on effect of Sunday morning's snow showers in Britain.
