England handed Euro soccer lifeline

England could now top their group in the race to qualify for next summer's European Championship soccer finals after it had looked like they were going out.

An inspired performance by Israel unexpectedly presented England with a vital lifeline when they beat Russia 2-1 in Tel Aviv.

That means England will qualify for the tournament in Austria and Switzerland if they draw with Group E leaders Croatia at Wembley on Wednesday.

In another surprise, Croatia lost 2-0 in Macedonia, meaning England can go past them and top the group if they beat them by two goals.

However an England defeat is likely to mean they would not qualify, as Russia finish their qualifying campaign against tiny Andorra, with victory seemingly assured.

Meanwhile Scots fans suffered qualification heartbreak when they saw their side beaten 2-1 by world champions Italy at Hampden Park.

Christian Panucci's 90th minute winner killed off Scotland's hopes.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who attended the match, said: "Alex McLeish and his team have done something remarkable in this campaign.

Northern Ireland still continue to dream of qualification. David Healy scored a superb winner in the 2-1 victory over Denmark, and also became the record scorer in a European Championship qualifying campaign, overtaking Davor Suker's 12-goal mark, which was set 12 years ago.

Nigel Worthington's side must win against Spain in midweek and hope Sweden lose at home to Latvia for them to progress.
