Entwistle to be sentenced to life

Double killer Neil Entwistle will be sentenced to life in jail without any chance of parole over the murders of his American wife and baby daughter.

The former computer worker was reprehensible, shameful and cowardly as he disparaged the memory of his wife Rachel and vilified her entire family during the course of his 14-day trial, US prosecutors said.

The 29-year-old from Kilton, Worksop, was convicted on Wednesday of murdering his 27-year-old wife and their nine-month-old daughter Lillian Rose at their new home in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, on January 20, 2006.

"Neil Entwistle will spend the rest of his life in jail, which is where he belongs," Middlesex district attorney Gerard Leone Jr said.

He said it was a "true, just and right verdict" after about 13 hours of jury deliberations at the Middlesex County Superior Court in Woburn, Massachusetts, and commended Mrs Entwistle's parents for their "poise and dignity" as about 30 of their friends and relatives gathered for a press conference.

"At the same time that I commend Joe and Priscilla, I condemn Neil Entwistle," he said.

"I condemn Neil Entwistle for his unspeakable, unforgivable acts.

"But I condemn Neil Entwistle for compounding the unspeakable nature of what he has done by disparaging the memory of his wife and vilifying the entire Matterazzo family by his decisions during the course of this trial.

"But make no mistake about it. He is now held accountable and responsible for these unforgivable acts."

Entwistle's mother Yvonne, a school dinner lady, insisted her son was innocent and said she was "devastated to learn that the evidence points to Rachel murdering our grandchild and then committing suicide".
