Escort work ads on Jobcentre site

A Government website aimed at helping people find jobs has been attacked after it emerged it was advertising work at escort agencies.

The Department for Work and Pensions Jobcentre Plus website hosts advertisements promising adults up to £100-an-hour for the role.

But a spokeswoman for a charity working with women in the sex trade said she was "shocked" by the adverts which she claimed would lead women into prostitution.

Frances Broderick, from Eaves, told Channel 4 News: "I'm shocked that the DWP are even advertising this as an opportunity. It's clearly not a suitable career choice for the DWP to be promoting."

She said the adverts were "clearly helping women into prostitution".

One advert, promising £90-an-hour to over-18s in Cardiff, stated: "Duties involve providing clients with a personal escort service in an unsupervised environment.

"Experience is preferred but is not essential. Duties will involve escorting and accompanying members of the public which may cause embarrassment to some people."

The adverts cannot be banned by the website as a result of a High Court ruling four years ago.

A DWP spokeswoman said: "Jobcentre Plus is required to advertise any legal job within the adult industry, a requirement which was confirmed in a legal test case brought by the Ann Summers company in 2003.

"We have safeguards in place to ensure customers are fully aware of the nature of these jobs. Our advisers always check on the full details of any vacancies notified to us."
