EU enlargement 'halted'

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has said the EU enlargement process is effectively "stopped" after Irish voters rejected an EU integration treaty.

Sarkozy says there is no point in enlarging the bloc without an agreement of the current 27 members on the EU's future.

Sarkozy was speaking to reporters early Friday at a two-day summit in Brussels.

The Irish "no" vote on an EU treaty last week was a central topic at the summit. The rejection means the pact, which streamlines the way the EU makes decisions and bolsters its foreign policy role, cannot go into effect in the 27 states.
