Ex-councillor charged with murder

A former Sinn Fein councillor has denied the murder of policeman Stephen Carroll.

Brendan McConville, 37, of Glenholme Avenue, Lurgan, Co Armagh, also denies possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life following the shooting dead of Pc Carroll earlier this month.

There was no application for bail during the hearing at Lisburn Magistrates' Court and he has been remanded in custody until April 3 at Craigavon Magistrates' Court.

The dissident republican Continuity IRA claimed responsibility following the death in Craigavon, Co Armagh.

McConville, who has been in custody for 15 days, served on Craigavon Borough Council from 1993 to 1997.

Belfast's High Court ruled that six men charged in connection with three security force killings - of Pc Carroll and two soldiers - should be charged or released.
