The 30-year-old man died in hospital on Saturday after the jump at Langar Airfield in Nottingham at around 2pm.
The man has not yet been named but police said he was a Class C skydiver who had previously completed close to 1,000 parachute jumps.
He was completing his third parachute jump of the day when the accident happened.
A spokeswoman for Nottinghamshire Police said: "The seat was an experienced skydiver certificated to Class C which confirms he had completed in excess of 200 jumps.
"It is believed he had actually done closer to 1,000 jumps."
She added: "He had descended from 12,500ft in the normal manner with full parachute deployment and no problems, but as he came in to land he appeared to be going too fast and landed awkwardly, striking his head as he came to rest."
The man was airlifted to Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham, where he later died.
Police said his parachute had been fully examined following the incident and was found to be "in good working order with no defects or faults".
A spokesman for British Parachute Schools, based at Langar Airfield said: "I can confirm that he was jumping with BPS but I am not in a position to comment further at this stage." He added that the British Parachute Association has launched an investigation into the incident.
